Rhamondre Stevenson fumbling the football could be new to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, however sadly, it is a acquainted pattern.
Stevenson, who led the league in fumbles final season, has coughed it up 9 instances (!) because the begin of the 2024 marketing campaign. The fifth-year working again has fumbled it 16 times in 38 career starts after New England’s 21-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Patriots insiders Phil Perry and Tom E. Curran appeared on Early Edition on Monday evening and defined why Vrabel should consider benching Stevenson. The 2 aren’t reacting to a one-game pattern measurement, in any case.
“I feel it is potential,” Perry responded when requested if he thinks Vrabel will bench Stevenson in Week 4 towards the Carolina Panthers. “It looks like Mike Vrabel left the door open for that. He stated in the present day, ‘We’ll see later within the week what meaning by way of reps for Rhamondre Stevenson after that type of efficiency.’ He stated final evening, ‘I am solely 20 minutes from the top of the sport right here, we nonetheless have to speak about it.’
“That is an indicator that there’s a resolution to make,” Perry stated. “It’s not simply, ‘Let’s proceed to plow forward and roll ahead with what the choices have been up to now.’ So, to me, yeah, I feel it ought to be on the desk. You could have a deep working again room. You could have a chance to lean on another person right here. Why not do it?”
Curran agreed.
“He is fumbled 9 instances because the starting of final 12 months. 9!” Curran stated. “Should you do not do one thing about it, when you permit him to go on the market and he fumbles once more, then who’s silly? Who’s the dummy? The supervisor who permits that to proceed to occur with out having sufficient ramifications and sufficient time to repair it.”
The choice could be simpler on Vrabel if backup working backs Antonio Gibson and TreVeyon Henderson executed their duties flawlessly. Nevertheless, Gibson also fumbled on the possession after Stevenson’s second giveaway. And Henderson, who was praised for his capacity in go safety popping out of faculty, has struggled in just a few areas himself. Henderson averaged 2.5 yards per carry when he took over the lion’s share of the workload late Sunday afternoon.
On paper, the Patriots have a good matchup towards the Panthers. Carolina ranks thirtieth out of 32 groups on the subject of dashing yards allowed per try this season. The Panthers additionally rank twenty sixth in dashing yards allowed per sport. That is the excellent news.
The unhealthy? Carolina ranks fourth in forced turnovers and New England has turned it over six times in three games.
