Drake Maye landed in arguably the worst scenario of any quarterback chosen within the 2024 NFL Draft.
The third general decide already is on his second head coach and his second offensive coordinator whereas operating a second offensive system in two seasons. If you happen to replicate again to Maye’s tenure at North Carolina, he is now had 4 offensive coordinators the final 4 years.
The teaching turnover is likely one of the the explanation why you can’t compare the Patriots second-year signal-caller to any others drafted in his class, together with Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy. Nevertheless it’s certainly not the only factor that advantages McCarthy, who was drafted tenth general.
“Too typically folks attempt to divorce the quarterbacks from the scenario that they are in,” Sports activities Illustrated’s Albert Breer said on Early Edition on Tuesday evening. “You’ll be able to’t do this.”
He added: “A lot of what they stroll into winds up having an unbelievable influence on what they wind up producing.”
Actually, McCarthy landed in arguably the perfect scenario of any of the six QBs (Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Maye, Michael Penix, McCarthy, Bo Nix) drafted in 2024.
The items round him are a significant motive why the Michigan product was capable of lead the Vikings to a win in his NFL debut in opposition to the Bears on Monday evening. Maye didn’t fare the same.
Kevin O’Connell, contemporary off a Coach of the 12 months honor in 2024, is likely one of the brightest offensive minds within the sport. You will be hard-pressed to discover a higher large receiver room than McCarthy’s in Minnesota, which options reigning First Group All-Professional Justin Jefferson, 2023 first-round decide Jordan Addison and surehanded veteran Adam Thielen.
The operating again tandem of Aaron Jones Sr. and Jordan Mason is sweet if not nice. All whereas the offensive line which incorporates, from left to proper, 2021 first-rounder Christian Darrisaw, 2025 first-rounder Donovan Jackson, four-time Professional Bowler Ryan Kelly, offseason signee Will Fries and two-time Professional Bowler Brian O’Neill, may signify the largest benefit of all.
“I simply suppose if you take a look at the totality of J.J. McCarthy’s scenario,” Breer mentioned, “… it is not the identical factor.”
Patriots insider Phil Perry agreed with Breer.
“I simply would take a look at it and say, ‘You have to wait.’ Wait somewhat bit, wait till you get a full season and let’s simply see the way it seems,” Perry mentioned on Early Version.
Perry acknowledged that due to their respective conditions, there is a sturdy likelihood McCarthy performs higher than Maye this season, regardless of Maye having the benefit in NFL expertise. McCarthy was sidelined for his whole rookie season after he tore his ACL.
Nonetheless, Perry is not prepared to say the Patriots obtained it unsuitable. He would not anticipate saying it anytime quickly, both.
“As someone who believes that Drake Maye continues to be the participant that I’d slightly have if I am an NFL franchise, I additionally consider that J.J. McCarthy may very effectively have, clearly, a greater 2025 NFL season,” Perry mentioned. “Due to the scenario that he is in.
“It’s clearly, far and away, a greater quarterbacking scenario in Minnesota in comparison with what Drake Maye is coping with.”
