New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel made some attention-grabbing feedback on the radio this previous week when he talked in regards to the staff’s play-calling in a Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
“I’ve by no means actually tried to second-guess the play-calling,” Vrabel said Monday morning on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Present. “I all the time suppose that one of the best performs are ones which are decisive, and that the gamers know and that they belief. And clearly there’s some higher ones, however I do not suppose there’s an ideal name. And so we get again and we take a look at it, and I am positive there’s all the time going to be some ones that we will wish to have again.”
The feedback made it truthful to wonder if he had any points with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ play-calling. The Patriots offense scored simply seven factors within the second half of that defeat to the Payments after dominating for a lot of the primary half.
Sports activities Illustrated’s Albert Breer joined NBC Sports activities Boston’s Patriots Pregame Dwell earlier than Sunday evening’s sport towards the Baltimore Ravens and defined that “issues have been actually nice” between the 2 longtime coaches.
Breer additionally offered some vital context.
“Let’s begin at a baseline, which is, it is truthful to ask these questions, as a result of this was a little bit little bit of an organized marriage. I do not suppose that Josh McDaniels would have been Mike Vrabel’s offensive coordinator if (Vrabel) had taken the job, say, in Chicago,” Breer stated.
“My guess is he would have tried to get Tommy Rees out of Cleveland, and one of many the explanation why Cleveland promoted Tommy Rees is as a result of they knew Mike Vrabel favored him and would possibly take him if he had gone to one of many different spots. So there’s that piece of it.
“There’s additionally some philosophical divide that they needed to bridge. Mike Vrabel, after all, in Houston, coached within the New England system and was with Invoice O’Brien, who ran the New England system, and he determined to go the opposite means when he went to Tennessee and employed Matt LaFleur, after which saved the West Coast system with Arthur Smith and Todd Downing because the years went on there.
“And a lot of it for Mike is predicated on simplicity, proper? As a result of he is an ex-player, he needs his gamers enjoying quick and assured, and a few of what Josh McDaniels does is rooted in complexity, which, once more, would carry a pure divide there.
“However my understanding is these guys have labored all of that out, and it is apparent the job that Josh has achieved, the place the offense ranks, what Drake Maye appears to be like like as an MVP candidate in his second 12 months.”
McDaniels has achieved a terrific job throughout his third stint in New England. Maye’s improvement is forward of schedule. He’s an actual MVP candidate in Year 2. Rookie TreVeyon Henderson is a real difference-maker at working again. The offensive line is miles higher than it was the earlier two seasons.
The offense just isn’t good by any means, however the enchancment from 2024 has been exceptional.

Eric Canha-Imagn Pictures Josh McDaniels has been a terrific OC for Drake Maye.
One of many attributes of a terrific supervisor/chief is figuring out methods to greatest talk with the folks you’re employed with, and the way they will reply to suggestions in numerous methods. Vrabel understands this.
“And as for a few of the stuff that Mike stated, I might simply say this — I suppose Mike’s emotional intelligence is at a really excessive degree amongst NFL coaches, and I feel he is aware of what folks want,” Breer defined.
“And I feel he is aware of that Josh does not must be coddled, whereas with the defensive coaches, with every thing that that facet of the employees has been via this 12 months, with Terrell Williams getting sick, after which Zak Kuhr — who’s one among Mike’s guys going all the best way again to Ohio State — being thrust into this position as a first-time play-caller with out having a spring or a summer season to work on it.
“I feel he knew that these guys wanted the arm across the shoulder a little bit bit greater than Josh did. So I feel it is a confluence of all of these issues, however my understanding is issues have actually been nice between Josh and Mike.”
The Patriots are 11-3 and the offense is a lot better than it has been in a very long time. So it is protected to say the Vrabel-McDaniels partnership has been a house run up to now.
