The Boston Crimson Sox are baseball staff … that may very well be an entire lot higher.
That a lot was evident over the past three days, which noticed the Crimson Sox take Game 1 of their American League Wild Card series vs. New York Yankees because of a dominant outing by ace Garrett Crochet, solely to falter in Games 2 and 3 as a consequence of a combination of subpar defense, a light-hitting lineup and a scarcity of pitching depth.
The excellent news is that Boston ought to get a lift in 2026 from the returns of injured place gamers Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Triston Casas, in addition to pitchers Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford. But when this staff is severe about making a deep postseason run, then extra funding is required in a roster that simply had too many holes this season.
So, what strikes ought to chief baseball officer Craig Breslow make this offseason to assist Boston take the following step?
MLB reporter Joon Lee joined Boston Sports activities Tonight from Yankee Stadium after Recreation 3 on Thursday night time to suggest two roster-altering choices for the Crimson Sox.
Change of surroundings for Jarren Duran?
Jarren Duran is considered one of Boston’s longest-tenured gamers and generally is a tone-setter on offense when he is at his finest. However he is additionally vulnerable to offensive chilly streaks and defensive lapses. If the Crimson Sox wish to add an influence beginning pitcher, maybe they’d think about buying and selling Duran and rolling with an outfield of Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu in 2026.
“I’m curious to see what the way forward for Jarren Duran on the Crimson Sox seems like, as a result of that Recreation 2 mistake is unacceptable,” Lee stated, referring to Duran’s expensive drop of a fly ball that allowed a Yankees run to attain.
“I do know that he’s a cult hero in Boston at this level, however there’s so many issues the place there are errors on the margins that add up and in massive moments actually, actually develop, and I believe that Duran has had so a lot of these alternatives this season the place he has type of dropped the ball.
“I believe it could be good for a change of temperature inside the membership, given how a lot weight they’ve placed on him and the way a lot I believe the staff actually rides his emotional ups and downs all through the course of the 12 months.”
Reunion with Kyle Schwarber?
All Kyle Schwarber has performed for the reason that Crimson Sox let him stroll in 2021 free company is mash 187 house runs (tied for the second-most in baseball behind solely Aaron Decide) and drive in 434 runs (fourth-most in baseball).
And whereas the 32-year-old ought to command a comparatively giant contract this winter after a profession 12 months with the Phillies — 56 house runs and an MLB-leading 132 RBI — he can most likely be had on a short-term deal.
“I believe Kyle Schwarber is a man that they need to exit and attempt to get, as a result of whether or not it is at first base or at designated hitter, we have seen him play in Boston already,” Lee stated. “We all know that he steps up in these massive moments and he can hit these house runs.
“He is at a degree in his profession the place the sport has modified and his sport is definitely going to age fairly properly, particularly if he continues to solely play first base and designated hit. He is bought the power-hitter swing. He is bought the bat pace, he is not counting on his athleticism, and I believe he is comparatively going to age properly and never price $50 million a 12 months. Like, this is not a Juan Soto contract scenario.
“So, in case you can maintain a whole lot of that offensive core that I believe elevated this staff this previous offseason and herald a man like Kyle Schwarber, I believe that is what is going to assist take the staff to the following degree.”
