There is not a lot to knock Jayson Tatum for as of late. The Boston Celtics star is coming off an NBA championship and his sixth NBA All-Star Recreation look.
Tatum’s 2024-25 marketing campaign has gone off and not using a hitch, pun supposed. The soon-to-be 27-year-old labored through the offseason on quickening the discharge on his bounce shot, lessening the perceived “hitch” that restricted his effectiveness when capturing off the dribble.
His coach and capturing coach, Drew Hanlen, helped him tweak his shot after the 2024 Paris Olympics. Whereas the changes helped make Tatum’s capturing movement smoother, Hanlen would not label his obvious pause as a hitch.
He set the report straight on Tatum’s shot throughout a new episode of “Hoopin’ with Kayla Burton.”
“Plenty of followers would say, ‘Oh, Jayson has a hitch,” Hanlen advised Burton. “First off, Jayson’s double-jointed, which suggests when he goes like this (extends arm outward), his elbow truly pops this manner (to the left). So lots of people once they truly see the hitch, they assume that it is like, a pause. Actually, it is simply he is double-jointed.
“The second factor is, it is just a bit bit off of what appears to be like regular to him. So once you see him capturing his excellent shot when it is flowing properly, everybody’s like, ‘That is an important shot.’ Once you see the ball go up a bit bit too excessive and he pauses only for a second on the high of his launch, that is when followers assume it is a hitch.”
Hitch or no hitch, Tatum has cemented himself as one of many NBA’s finest. Thus far in his eighth season, he is averaging 26.8 factors, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per recreation whereas capturing 45.4 % from the ground and 35.7 % from 3-point vary. He notched his second triple-double of the season in Thursday’s dominant win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
