Coming into this week, all 12 members of the Staff USA squad headed to the 2024 Paris Olympics have been multiple-time NBA All-Stars. That modified Wednesday, when future Corridor of Famer Kawhi Leonard bowed out on account of damage and was replaced by Boston Celtics guard Derrick White.
So, why did White — whose USA Basketball bio lists his NBA honors as “2023 All-NBA Defensive Staff” and “2018 “NBA G League champion” — get the decision as an alternative of a bunch of different out there American stars, together with his personal Celtics teammate and 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown?
It is a truthful query that Brown himself appeared to ask Wednesday on social media. And USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill has a good reply.
In an interview with Andscape’s Marc J. Spears, Hill shared an awesome quote when requested concerning the challenges of assembling a 12-man roster from such a robust expertise pool.
“It is like a puzzle, man,” Hill instructed Spears. “You bought to place the items collectively that match and that complement. And so, consequently, you’re leaving guys off who’re actually good and guys that I’m a fan of.
“… However a coach as soon as instructed me {that a} crew is sort of a piano recital. You bought piano movers, You bought piano tuners, and you bought piano gamers. And also you want all three to placed on a very good present. You’ll be able to’t have all piano gamers. And so that will match this or might not, however you want roles and also you want guys that match.”
Hill shared that quote earlier than White was added to the roster Wednesday, but it surely aptly sums up why the versatile Celtics guard is headed to Paris.
White was the definition of a perfect teammate in Boston this season. He delivered regardless of the crew required of him with just about no ego, whether or not that was establishing Brown and Jayson Tatum as a ball-moving facilitator, taking over as the team’s No. 1 offensive option, or defending the opponent’s greatest participant.
White repeatedly proved he can hit huge pictures in huge moments — he hit 52.2 p.c of his “clutch” 3-pointers in 2023-24, the highest percentage in the NBA amongst gamers with at the least 20 such makes an attempt — however infrequently pressured pictures and virtually at all times made the proper basketball play.
Basically, White is the proper “piano tuner” for Staff USA, and Hill appeared to acknowledge that. White and Celtics teammate Jrue Vacation possible will not log essentially the most minutes or put up the gaudiest stats in Paris, however they’re supreme position gamers to enhance the People’ laundry record of superstars led by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid and Anthony Edwards (self-appointed).
Brown completely is deserving a spot on Staff USA, and you would make a very good case for the Celtics star over a participant like Devin Booker. However White additionally makes an entire lot of sense on this present roster, and Grant Hill seemingly is aware of it.
