After years of surgical procedures, setbacks, accidents, and freak accidents that prompted then-Crimson Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom to ask if somebody had a voodoo doll, Chris Sale has lastly reached the mountaintop.
At 35 years outdated and 14 years into his main league profession, he’s received his first profession Cy Younger Award.
Completely, name it a comeback. (He was named NL Comeback Participant of the 12 months final week.)
Between his 2010 debut and the tip of 2018, Sale was one of many recreation’s most dominant arms. Pitching in 287 video games (207 begins) between the White Sox (2010-16) and Crimson Sox, he posted a 2.89 ERA (by no means worse than 3.41 in any season). Starting in 2012, he put collectively seven consecutive All-Star seasons and completed no worse than sixth in Cy Younger in every. He capped off the 2018 season by hanging out Manny Machado to defeat the Dodgers within the World Sequence.

Over his last three years in Boston (‘21-23), he solely made 31 begins (151 innings) as varied roadblocks arose. There was a rib stress fracture, the fractured pinky on a line-drive comebacker by Aaron Hicks, and the damaged wrist when he fell off his bicycle someday whereas rehabbing mentioned pinky. Final season, he missed two months as a consequence of a stress response in his scapula, however managed to make 20 begins.
The Crimson Sox traded Sale to the Atlanta Braves final winter. Whether or not it was the change of surroundings, new routine, a much-needed spate of fine luck on the well being entrance, or some mixture of the three, ‘Classic Sale’ took the mound in 2024. Over 29 begins (177.2 innings) – his most since 2017 – the veteran southpaw went 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA and an NL-leading 225 strikeouts. His first Cy Younger is the big exclamation level that ends this triumphant season-long sentence, which included his first All-Star choice since 2018 and his first-ever Gold Glove.
He’s at all times been a fierce competitor, relentless within the pursuit of excellence, and infrequently glad. (Bear in mind when he struck out 17 Colorado Rockies and tried to persuade supervisor Alex Cora to let him go for 20?) Even on his greatest days in Boston, he was exceedingly laborious on himself; early in spring coaching 2023, he informed the Herald he had bother celebrating his accomplishments. When he endured setback after setback, nobody was extra pissed off than the person himself.
As for the Crimson Sox, they’ll have to attend to see how their half of the commerce, infielder Vaughn Grissom, pans out.
