PLYMOUTH — Whether or not the Bruins can survive within the ultra-competitive Atlantic Division this season is a large open query, although one most observers would reply within the unfavorable. However a authentic purpose for optimism is the actual chance that they need to get a a lot better contribution from the pair of Lindholms of their make use of than they did final 12 months.
The Lindholms – the no-relation Elias and Hampus – are each wholesome. That might not be stated for Elias at the beginning of the season, nor for Hampus, who suffered a season-ending damaged kneecap on Nov. 12 of final 12 months.
Each Swedes had been in attendance on the Bruins Basis annual event at Pinehills Golf Membership, the unofficial kickoff to the season, and each expressed optimism that 2025-26 can be quite a bit higher for them than 2024-25 was.
Elias, the centerman who was signed to a seven-year deal price $54.25 million final summer time, had suffered a again damage throughout coaching again house earlier than arriving for his first Bruin coaching camp. He practiced the primary day after which missed many of the remainder of camp. Although he would play all 82 video games, the damage lingered into the season and it wasn’t till late within the 12 months – when the marketing campaign was all however misplaced – that he discovered his groove taking part in between David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie.
“It was a great way to complete for me,” stated the centerman. “Clearly, I received put in place to play with these two and had some good chemistry. It was fairly simple for me to go in there and play. It was good for me and a lift. It carried over somewhat bit to the (World Championships). So I’m coming in right here with some fairly good confidence so hopefully we are able to do one thing good this 12 months.”
Lindholm completed with a 17-30-47 season in 82 video games however within the ultimate 16 video games in opposition to the commerce deadline whereas skating primarily with Pastrnak and Geekie, he was nearer to a point-a-game participant, notching 6-9-15 within the span.
New coach Marco Sturm stated that there can be quite a lot of trial and error along with his ahead strains in camp, however he has stated he’ll no less than begin with the Geekie-Lindholm-Pastrnak line. Although the 30-year-old centerman’s identified for his stable two-way play, his manufacturing final season was not sufficient. If he can stick along with his two wingmen, he ought to be capable to enhance on that whole. Pastrnak would be the offensive driver of that line however the famous person ought to create possibilities for each Geekie and Lindholm.
“If you’re put able like that, you clearly wish to rating and assist the workforce,” stated Elias, whose profession excessive was 82 factors in 2021-22 in Calgary. “All through the season, the position modified somewhat bit. Earlier than that, I used to be extra of a shutdown participant, so it’s tougher to get photographs off whenever you begin within the D-zone. It’s somewhat completely different. However clearly, when you could have the chance, you wish to shoot the puck. That’s one thing I’d love to do extra and hopefully we are able to play higher hockey and be put in additional positions to shoot and rating.”
Hampus Lindholm, in the meantime, stated he’s been again on the ice since June and had a “nice summer time” rehabbing the knee. On the time he received damage, he was arguably the B’s greatest defenseman in a 12 months that was already going sideways. He took a shot off the knee in a sport in St. Louis, knocking him out of the lineup. He was again on the ice after Christmas and he appeared near a return simply earlier than the 4 Nations break. However with among the {hardware} in his knee inflicting irritation, he wanted one other process and was misplaced for the 12 months.
The ever-affable defenseman tried to seek out the constructive in his state of affairs.
“You may’t actually do something about these issues,” he stated. “I’ve been making an attempt to take a look at my damage this summer time and on a regular basis I needed to get stronger, larger and to have a good higher season than I’ve had prior to now. I’m very excited and filled with vitality to return again and excited to see the fellows.”
With this being an Olympic 12 months, he needs to get again on his house nation’s radar after lacking the 4 Nations final season.
“After all, there’s somewhat further gas, not that you simply want that to play within the NHL. That’s gas sufficient,” he stated. “However after all there’s somewhat further pleasure. I do know if I play the hockey that I do know that I can, all the remainder of it’s going to care for itself.”
For the primary time shortly, nobody is anticipating a lot from the Bruins this 12 months. However Hampus Lindholm believes that with the offseason additions, in addition to the return of a wholesome Charlie McAvoy and himself, the B’s may shock some folks.
“It’s going to be a enjoyable 12 months,” stated the defenseman. “I believe lots of people are going to underestimate us and we are able to attempt to use that to our favor, being the underdog and get again to that Bruins hockey everyone knows we are able to play.”
