Earlier than Brad Marchand was Patrice Bergeron’s sidekick, there was Marco Sturm.
After the large Joe Thornton commerce that introduced Sturm – named the Bruins’ new head coach on Thursday – to Boston, Bergeron was moved to his pure heart place and Sturm ultimately discovered his solution to the long run captain’s left wing.
And Sturm and Bergeron will probably be endlessly linked by the aim on which they mixed at Fenway Park in 2010, Sturm’s additional time winner over the Flyers that continued to construct momentum for the franchise that was simply regaining its profile amongst all of the native franchises that had already gained championships within the earlier decade. Sturm had already scored an enormous game-winning aim in Recreation 6 of the Bruins’ sequence towards Montreal in 2008 that put the B’s again on the map, regardless that they had been in the end crushed that 12 months in Recreation 7.
“That was an enormous aim,” mentioned Bergeron, who was out with what was a season-ending concussion. “He all the time had a knack for scoring these targets. He scored that aim at Fenway as properly. Sure, it was a daily season sport however, let’s be trustworthy, it was greater than only a common season sport for us. It was particular. It was our first out of doors sport and it was the start of all these classics. Scoring in additional time at Fenway was additionally very particular and I’ve nice reminiscences for that. He all the time discovered a means of stepping up on the proper second and I do keep in mind that Recreation 6. And once more, it was that celebration, that emotion. That’s what stands out in my thoughts essentially the most.”
Bergeron can’t say that he had all the time pegged Sturm as a future coach, however he’s adopted his profession and he believes the Bruins have discovered the precise man for the job.
“It’s all the time exhausting to know who’s going to be a coach down the street or not. However then I all the time noticed the love of the sport, the vitality, I all the time noticed the management in him and his capability to convey guys collectively simply by who he was as an individual,” mentioned Bergeron. “He clearly understood the sport rather well and had a knack for simply staying composed when it was wanted, principally. When it was a little bit tougher or when issues didn’t end up the best way we anticipated them to, we may depend on him to calm all the things down by his demeanor. To me, it speaks so much a couple of good high quality for a coach. I’m actually excited for him. I couldn’t consider a greater candidate for the Bruins.”
Coming into the league as an 18-year-old, Bergeron had a number of mentors within the B’s group early in his profession. Sturm, who performed for the B’s from 2005-10, was an necessary one.
“Clearly, Marco had an affect in my profession early on once I was at a younger age, taking part in with him once I was 20 years outdated,” mentioned Bergeron. “For me, it was actually necessary in creating connections but in addition studying from the older guys, and he was one in every of them that got here in and helped me so much. I had a number of enjoyable taking part in with him, so we stayed in contact all around the years, regardless that we didn’t play collectively so long as we might have preferred. We stayed in contact and I all the time adopted his profession and stayed in contact by way of how our households had been doing. For him as coach I adopted his profession ever since he was on the Olympics behind the German bench. It’s been an excellent journey for him and that is nice information and I’m blissful that he will get rewarded.”
To these of us on the surface wanting in, the scenario that Sturm walked into when he arrived in Boston gave the impression to be extraordinarily troublesome. He got here right here as a part of a bundle from San Jose for standard celebrity Thornton, who would win the Hart Trophy in that season of the commerce with the Sharks.
But when life in Boston at first was exhausting for Sturm, he didn’t present it.
“For me, I didn’t actually see it,” mentioned Bergeron. “He appeared blissful to be with the Bruins. I believe it was out of his management, to be trustworthy with you. He was the one which obtained traded right here, sure, however he was an enormous a part of that commerce and he gave us some actually good years and scored some large targets for us. I’ve all the time admired his vitality and the best way he’s as an individual. He’s all the time smiling, he’s all the time wanting on the glass half-full and to me as a coach, that’s an enormous high quality to have.”
It’s a positivity that the B’s will want. They do possess one of many stars of the league in David Pastrnak and a few star energy on the again finish with Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm. However he’ll even be charged with incorporating some younger gamers into the lineup.
“I believe it’s a problem he’s up for,” mentioned Bergeron. “You have a look at a coach that’s been across the American league, he’s been an assistant coach (within the NHL) as properly. He’s a man that’s capable of develop and he’s been there. And he’s been by way of it himself as a participant. He’s obtained plenty of expertise to convey it again and train these guys and to have the ability to relate to them.”
