Should Patriots pay reported asking price? – NBC Boston

The New England Patriots want a No. 1 vast receiver and Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf matches the invoice. So, ought to the Patriots name the Seahawks and attempt to work one thing out?

Properly, as at all times, it relies on price.

Regardless that Metcalf has reportedly requested a trade, it takes two to make a deal. And in line with The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Seahawks are in search of a first- and third-round decide in a possible Metcalf commerce. As well as, Metcalf is in search of a wage of $30 million per season in his subsequent contract, per Russini.

Let’s sort out the primary a part of Russini’s report.

A primary- and a third-round decide is means an excessive amount of of a worth to pay. If the worth for the Washington Commanders acquiring star wideout Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers was merely a fifth-rounder, then there is no shot the Seahawks get a primary and one thing else for Metcalf. Certain, Metcalf is youthful and a greater participant than Samuel, however not sufficient to give up a first-rounder.

What a few second-round decide? The Patriots have the No. 38 total choice (the sixth decide in Spherical 2). In addition they personal two third-rounders at No. 69 and No. 77 total. One or two of these picks for Metcalf can be simpler for the Patriots to abdomen.

The Patriots aren’t able the place buying and selling first-round picks is sensible, particularly if they seem to be a bad-to-average group and choosing within the high 15 for a bit.

The second a part of Russini’s report is fascinating, too. Paying $30 million per season in a brand new deal for Metcalf can be costly, however that is just about the going price for vast receivers of his caliber. And with virtually $130 million in wage cap area this offseason, the Patriots have a number of cash to spend and vast receiver is arguably their No. 1 roster want.

Metcalf did tell Katie Nolan on “The Casuals Podcast” in January that Massachusetts “is just not a fascinating place in my view.” But when the Patriots provided him a ton of cash, perhaps he’d change his thoughts.

Metcalf tallied 66 receptions for 992 yards and 5 touchdowns in 15 video games final season. He has by no means completed with fewer than 900 yards in a single marketing campaign, and he additionally has three 1,000-yard seasons. At 6-foot-4 and 235 kilos, Metcalf has a singular mix of dimension, power and pace that makes him so robust to cowl.

The value to get Metcalf will not be low cost. Nevertheless it is sensible for the Patriots to a minimum of be aggressive in attempting to work one thing out.
